What are Succulents Good For?

Succulents are a great overall plant.  Not only are they easy to take care of, easy to propagate from leaves or clippings, and easy to take care of since they require little water and maintenance they also provide many benefits when grown indoors.  Succulent benefits are listed below.

Succulents Help Provide Oxygen

By having plants indoors you can improve the oxygen in your house.  All plants will absorb the carbon dioxide we breathe out and produce oxygen.  However unlike regular plants Succulents will produce oxygen around the clock where as regular plants will stop when its dark.

So with succulents you will be getting fresh oxygen all day (and night) every day (and night)!

The Beauty of the Succulent

There are so many different types of succulents and with each brings its own beauty.  Succulents can be arranged like artwork. Mixing the different varieties in different containers provides a great centerpiece on any table.

And not only can you put them in containers on tables you can also hang them on a wall if you
have the right planter.

Add Humidity to your Indoor Air

Indoor air can get dry and cause sore throats and dry skin especially during the winter months.

Bring in some succulents and your air humidity will increase in no time.  Succulents release water vapor through their tiny little succulent pores and help the air quality become less dry.

Improve Concentration with Succulents

With so many distractions around these days.  Checking facebook or instagram or email or checking your phone we need something / anything to help us focus.

Good news is that some studies have found that having plants and succulents in view in your work area can have a positive effect on your mental concentration.

You can read more about the study here

Going hand in hand with concentration it has been found that caring for succulents can help with …

Stress Reducing Succulents

After a long day at work coming home and taking care of your succulents can provide a great way to release your daily stress.

It can act much like a zen garden where you rake the sand and arrange the pebbles.

Taking your focus of the day and putting it into your succulents can calm you down help release the tension for the evening.

This last one has some conflicting reviews.

Improve Air Quality

A common question I here: Do Succulents Help Clean the Air?

We live in a world full of toxins and those toxins can and do get into our air both indoor air and outdoor air.

Because of this we should look to ways of improving our home air quality and unless your house is sealed and you have a great filter toxins from outside can and will make it inside.  Outdoor air that comes inside can bring toxins, pollen or other allergens inside.

Indoor air can also get contaminated even without the help of the outdoors.  Many of us use cleaners in our house that unbeknownst to us can contain many harmful toxins such as ammonia or benzene etc.

So if you are not using safe cleaners you can be doing harm while just cleaning the house.  That doesn’t seem right does it? But that is a story for another day.

All these different toxins can cause different types of symptoms such as itchy eyes or runny nose or sore throats and you may not even know why it’s happening.

Today we are looking to find out how to improve air quality inside – right?

Previous studies done by NASA have shown that adding plants and succulents inside can help clean the air.   Other studies show that plants can’t clean the air fast enough to be of any benefit.

I prefer to error on the side of plants.  Because of so many benefits besides possibly the air quality it just makes sense to have some or a lot of succulents and other indoor plants in your home.

One last bonus benefit

Health Benefits of Succulents Indoors or Medicinal Benefits

Some succulents can provide not only beauty but also have medicinal benefits.  Two of the main types of succulents that can provide medicinal value are Aloe Vera plant and the Yucca succulent.

Probably the most familiar is the Aloe plant.  Aloe vera gel is very good for the skin and can provide relief to burns.  You will also see that Aloe is included in many hand and or skin lotions. Just break a leaf of an aloe plant and you can rub the gel right on.

Something less common about aloe that you may not know is that it can be made into a drink.  You can find this in many natural or health stores. I can’t say if this is true or not but it is supposed to help reduce inflammation and help with digestion

The Yucca succulent provides many of the same benefits as the aloe plant.

Thanks for reading and as always we love to hear comments from our readers.  Let me know if there are any benefits we missed or if you have any first hand examples of how you have benefited from succulents.
