So you want to know how to grow succulents from a cutting? Well you have definitely come to the right place.
Succulents are such a cool plant. You can go from one single plant to a bunch of similar plants. You can take a leaf from multiple different plants and soon end up with a full garden of different succulents. They are so easy to care for, easy to propagate (or grow more from one single plant) and they look awesome.
There are different ways to grow succulents from a cutting. Because of this you can experiment with all the different methods and more often then not you will get new succulent plants.
Let’s start with growing from a leaf. Start by gently peeling the leaf away from the main plant. If you can get some of the main stem even better but not necessary.
Peel the leaves away one by one until you have as many as you want to grow and set them aside.
You can keep the mother plant (the one you are peeling the leaves off of) with its stem and replant that one later as well to keep it going.
Next step can go in different directions.
- Some will let the leaf set so that the end callouses over. This is done so that it the leaf doesn’t rot once water is added. Once it has the callous you can place it on top of some succulent / cactus soil.
- Another option is to put the leaves directly on top of the soil. Laying it flat on soil with the curved end point up and don’t down into the soil.
- One other option is to place them in perlite.
No matter what step above you choose – they are all used to get the leaf to start producing roots.
Once the leaf has some roots it is able to use them to take on water. Once there are roots you can plant them in soil and they will start to grow from there.
The original leaf that started the plant will most likely die off which is ok since it will be growing a new plant from the leaf and you will no longer need the original leaf.
If you happened to take the leaves from one of your own plants and want to replant it – that it is easy to do so. Since you have removed some of the leaves in the steps above you should have a nice stem in place. You will want to cut that stem about 3/4 of an inch below the remaining leaves. Then from there you can either place it in a jar with water until some roots begin to grow. Or you can simply replant that stem into soil and roots can grow from there.
Growing succulents is such a cool and easy thing to do. By growing succulents from cuttings You can basically get huge collection of succulents for free if you are willing to put in a little work and time.
What we like to do is when we go out on walks we will see succulents growing on the street and we will look for some leaves that may have fallen off the plant or may have been knocked off by the gardener and we will take a few of them and bring them home and add them to the collection.
Over time you can have many many different succulents growing in your garden indoors or out.
